Are you a Maine resident looking for a career that combines local community impact with the resources of a global healthcare leader? UnitedHealth Group, in strategic partnership with Northern Light Health and Optum, is seeking a Customer Service Representative to support patients across the state. This is a unique opportunity to work for a statewide healthcare system that prioritizes personalized, streamlined care while enjoying a competitive hourly wage and comprehensive benefits.
This position is Remote in Maine. If you are located within commutable distance to the office at 43 Whiting Hill Rd Brewer, Maine 04412, you will have the flexibility to work remotely* as you take on some tough challenges.
Opportunities at Northern Light Health, in strategic partnership with Optum. Whether you are looking for a role in a clinical setting or supporting those who provide care, we have opportunities for you to make a difference in the lives of those we serve. As a statewide health care system in Maine, we work to personalize and streamline health care for our communities. If the place for you is at a large medical center, a rural community practice or home care, you will find it here. Join our compassionate culture, enjoy meaningful benefits and discover the meaning behind: Caring. Connecting. Growing together.
This position is full-time (40 hours/week) Monday – Friday. Employees are required to have flexibility to work any of our 8-hour shift schedules during our normal business hours of 8:00 am – 4:30 pm EST. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime.
We offer 12 weeks of paid on-the-job training. The hours of the training will be during normal business hours. Training will be conducted onsite.
In this role, you aren’t just answering phones; you are an advocate for patients. You will manage the intersection of clinical care and financial administration, ensuring that every patient interaction ends with a clear resolution.
Primary Responsibilities:
First Call Resolution: Provide exceptional service by resolving patient inquiries regarding billing, scheduling, or complaints on the first contact.
Account Resolution: Research and resolve outstanding patient balances in compliance with departmental and system-wide policies.
Advocacy: Act as a liaison between patients and management to address complex billing issues or service complaints.
Process Improvement: Participate in team huddles to share knowledge and recommend ways to streamline the patient experience.
Payment Planning: Accurately schedule and manage patient payment plans according to internal guidelines.
Unlike standard remote roles, this position requires a localized presence for the initial phases of employment.
Academic: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: 1+ years of customer service experience specifically in healthcare, insurance, government, or social services.
Technical: 1+ years of data entry experience and proficiency with Windows PC applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
The Training Requirement: You must be able to train onsite for the first 12 weeks at 43 Whiting Hill Rd, Brewer, Maine.
Vaccination: A full Flu vaccination is an essential job function for this role.
In my opinion, the $16.15 – $28.80 salary range is incredibly strong for the Maine market, especially for a role that transition to 100% remote. Most Maine-based administrative roles cap at the lower end of that spectrum; reaching $28/hr as a CSR indicates a high ceiling for performance-based growth within UnitedHealth Group.
Note on Diversity & Inclusion: UnitedHealth Group is transparent about its workforce statistics. As of their most recent disclosures, approximately 52% of their U.S. workforce are women and 43% are people of color. They are actively working to mitigate health disparities that disproportionately affect historically marginalized groups.
My advice? If you live within a commutable distance of Brewer or Bangor, the 12-week onsite training is a small investment for a permanent remote career with a Fortune 5 company. Ensure your resume highlights your “First Call Resolution” (FCR) experience, as this is the primary KPI management looks for.
