Salary Range: $56,349.28 โ $73,247.20 annually (with incentives & career development)
The Garner Police Department is seeking dedicated and community-oriented individuals to join our team as Police Officers. This role involves protecting life and property through the prevention, detection, and investigation of law violations while fostering trust and partnerships with the community.
Officers are assigned to patrol squads, working rotating shifts under the supervision of a Sergeant or Corporal. Through our Career Development Program, officers have access to advancement opportunities, specialized assignments, and progressive salary growth.
Starting Salary: $56,349.28 annually
Hiring Range: Up to $73,247.20 based on skills & qualifications
Salary Incentives Available For:
Prior law enforcement experience: +2.5% per year (as determined by the Chief)
Specialized skills/experience: +2%
Certified Instructor: +2%
Military experience: +2%
Education: Associateโs (+1%), Bachelorโs (+2%), Masterโs (+3%)
Foreign language fluency: +2%

As a Police Officer, you will:
Patrol assigned areas, ensuring community safety and security
Enforce traffic laws, investigate accidents, and issue citations/arrests
Serve warrants, subpoenas, and criminal summons
Respond to emergencies, domestic incidents, and criminal activity
Investigate crimes, secure scenes, and collect evidence
Provide public assistance and community engagement
Testify in court and prepare detailed reports
Perform traffic control at accidents or major events
Participate in specialized units (e.g., K9, Traffic Safety, SRT, Crisis Negotiation, Community Liaison, etc.)
Applicants must:
Be a U.S. Citizen
Hold a High School Diploma or equivalent
Possess a valid driverโs license
Meet one of the following:
Currently sworn NC law enforcement officer
Hold a valid NC Law Enforcement Certification
Be enrolled in a NC Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program
Strong knowledge of law enforcement practices, town ordinances, and geography
Ability to follow instructions and prepare accurate reports
Excellent judgment in high-pressure situations
Strong interpersonal skills to interact firmly yet courteously with the public
Proficiency with firearms, emergency response, and safe vehicle operation
Ability to deliver credible testimony in court
The recruitment process typically takes 6โ8 weeks and includes:
Information Session & Written Exam (POST)
Oral Panel Interview
Conditional Offer (includes handgun qualification)
Background Investigation, CVSA (truth verification), drug test, medical & psychological exams
Final Interview with the Police Chief
